The Aviation Week Network's Program Excellence Initiative was created in response to repeated concerns about the complexity and difficulty associated with managing and leading the aerospace and defense programs that make up the industry's work.
The evaluation process for the awards includes identification of lessons learned and best practices. These will be presented in the Aviation Week Network Program Best Practices Symposium Oct. 26, and will cover areas such as reducing the development cycle, cost/affordability, and how to effectively integrate best practices from other companies and industries. The Program Excellence Awards Banquet will be held following the symposium, a celebration of the best in industry program performance and execution.
A total of 43 programs from all stages of the lifecycle have been nominated for the 2016 Program Excellence Awards. The nominees are currently being run through an initial screening against the Nunn-McCurdy breach listing and activity for the January 2013—January 2016 period. Once through this initial screening, the nominees will be provided with Phase I submission forms.
The programs ranged from large to small, from around the globe. And this year’s entries made it clear that the aerospace and defense industry is working toward improved and advanced manufacturing capabilities. In addition, this year’s research and development stage candidates represent autonomous systems, new aircraft, shifts in air traffic management technology, and the prioritization by defense agencies of missiles and air defense.
Finalists for the 2016 awards will be announced Sept. 1 and will be honored at the 12th annual Program Excellence Banquet, to be held Oct. 26 following the Program Excellence Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona.

October 26: Program Excellence Symposium and Awards Banquet
The 2016 Aviation Week Program Excellence Symposium and Awards Banquet will bring together program executives, their customer counterparts, and leaders from across the industry to recognize the best in performance and leadership. Finalists and winners will be identified in categories that reflect system and sub-system level programs at all phases of the lifecycle. This year's nominees will share lessons learned during the workshop.
October 27-28: AerospaceDefenseChain Conference
The 2nd Annual AerospaceDefenseChain Conference will focus on content requirements and future programs as we seek to balance changing customer demands, global markets, demographics, economic challenges and forecasts. Focus will be on pursuing sustainable growth opportunity initiatives.
