Wherever aircraft are assembled, maintained or operated, it is essential for each and every person to be mindful of foreign objects. If foreign objects exist in critical or sensitive areas like engines or flight controls, a serious safety threat can result. Serious incidents and even fatal accidents occur regularly due to foreign objects, and every year more than $4B in direct expenses can be traced back to everything from soda cans to toolboxes.
The industry has used the term foreign object damage (FOD) for decades, but in recent years the definition has been broadened to foreign object debris to refer to the hazard more broadly. The tools that technicians use to assemble and maintain aircraft and their components are actually a significant source of FOD. Every year, tens of thousands of tools are misplaced or left in aircraft during assembly or maintenance activities.
The number of tools in a facility can range from just a few hundred in a small repair station to literally tens of thousands in large manufacturing environment. The FOD threat is well recognized, and intricate tool control procedures are typically established to identify which tools are in use and who they have been assigned to. With few exceptions, those procedures are entirely manual and time consuming. They require frequent and regular inventory checks, tool check-out and check-in queues, and dedicated tool attendants to manage and oversee every transaction.
Despite the investment in people and time these processes represent, they have limited effectiveness and lost tools still occur regularly at all types of aerospace operations. “Tool sweeps” are routine, where all assembly or maintenance activity at a facility ceases while all personnel are reassigned from their regular tasks to locate a lost tool. Searches can last for hours, even days, and even involve disassembly of completed work as every potential hiding spot for a missing tool is explored.

Dr. Eherts is a PhD Toxicologist and a board certified Industrial Hygienist. Prior to his current position as Vice President of EHS and Chief Safety Officer for Sikorsky Aircraft Corp, he was the Executive Director of EHS for Purdue Pharma LP, headquartered in Stamford, CT. His largest challenges there involved controlling employee exposure to very potent narcotics during the manufacturing process itself, mitigating the potential for dust explosions and strictly controlling compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations. Before this, Dave was Global Director of IH, Environmental Health and Product Stewardship for Aventis Pharma. In that capacity, he managed teams in the US, France and Germany responsible for regional support to the over 70 Aventis Pharma sites worldwide. Prior to Aventis, Dave was Site Director of EHS for a 2000 person R&D site, Global Head of EHS for R&D and Worldwide Director of Occ Health and IH for Rhone-Poulenc (all at the same time) and prior to this he was Merck's Occupational and Environmental Toxicologist. Before working in the EHS field, Dave worked in Research and Development at Merck in the Pre-Clinical Toxicology group.
Besides working for a living, Dave is also the head of the Return-on-HSE-Investment (ROHSEI) Taskforce at ORC, a frequent presenter at AIHce, NIOSH Prevention through Design Conferences and Occupational Toxicology Roundtables. He’s on the advisory boards for ORC’s Occupational Safety and Health Group and their Executive Business Issues Forum and was recently appointed by the Secretary of Labor to the Federal Whistleblower Protection Advisory Committee.
Dave holds Bachelors degrees in Chemistry and Biology and a Masters and PhD in Environmental Toxicology from Drexel University. He is also an adjunct professor at New York Medical College (where he teaches courses in Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health), but most importantly, he's active in his community (on the board and the environmental business committee of Soundwaters and the environmental committee at Candlewood Lake Club), on Church Council and as a basketball and Little League baseball coach.

As Manager of Tool Rooms and Central Tooling, Paul Peretti of Delta Airlines has operational responsibility for nine tool rooms overseeing safety and compliance, procurement, tool inventory control systems, and tooling tactical support for Delta’s worldwide fleet. The Delta Tool Rooms support Line and Base Maintenance, Composite and Machine Shops, and also supports the Minneapolis tool rooms with process, technology, training and general support. Paul has been with Delta Airlines for 24 years with 22 years in Aircraft Tooling.
