9:00 am Looking to the Future: Engine MRO Demand, Trends and Forecast
  • David Stewart, Vice President, ICF SH&E
What is the state of the engine MRO market? With engine fleets expected to grow by 2.5% per annum over the next decade, the industry seems set for long term growth but is the recovery complete from the recent financial crisis? Evaluating the impact of the economic downturn and examining the latest forecasts. How will increasing fuel prices impact engine MRO? Assessing any fundamental changes in the market and how to adapt business strategies to fit the current environment.
9:45 am Latest Repair Technologies and Developments
  • Bernd Kriegl, Director Engineering Commercial MRO, MTU Aero Engines
  • Antoine Martin, Development Project Manager, CRMA
  • Oscar Pérez, Head of Parts Repair, IBERIA Engine Overhaul Shop
With engine maintenance the largest segment of total MRO spend, the need to develop cost efficient techniques is key and new technologies can be a vital factor in this process. An update on the most recent developments in engine MRO and how they will influence future repair trends. Reviewing the impact of ‘green’ technologies and how they will affect fuel efficiency. Understanding new engine technology and next-generation designs. How will these latest advances impact MRO costs?
10:45 am Networking Break
11:15 am Application of Lean Principles in Engine MRO
  • Serkan Ertekin, Director Engine Workshops, myTECHNIC
Investment in and concentration on lean practices has increased in recent years due to its proven success in decreasing cycle times, increasing productivity and improving quality. What are the latest innovations in lean and what is the true impact on TAT and reliability? How does the expected TAT match up to reality and what are the cost implications, if any? What benefits of lean are passed directly onto the customer?
12:00 pm Outlook for PMA Parts and DER Repairs
  • Patrick Markham, VP Technical Services, HEICO Aerospace
With increased interest from OEMs in providing engine maintenance and the growth in the utilisation of leased engines, what are the prospects of the use for PMA parts and DER repairs? What strategies do the PMA companies have in place to compete against OEM repair materials and lessor non-acceptance? What are the comparative benefits and pitfalls of PMA/DER vs OEM materials? What demand is there in the customer community for both types of repair? Exploring the potentials and evaluating the future of engine repair strategies.
12:45 pm Lunch
sponsored by Chromalloy
2:00 pm Panel Discussion: Engine MRO Selection – What are the Options?
  • MODERATOR: Enrique Hernandez, General Manager, Turkish Engine Centre
  • Panelists to include:
  • David Cook, President, ASM Consulting
  • Derek Paterson, Director Sales Europe, MTU Maintenance Hannover
  • Pedro Pedroso, General Manager Engine Sales, TAP Maintenance & Engineering
The requirement to create value in engine MRO is one of the key influencers on procurement and the central challenge of the sector for suppliers. What are the newest services being offered by maintenance providers as part of the engine MRO package? What are the critical differentiators that impact engine MRO selection? A look at the latest offerings in electronic, financial and additional supports. Are ‘nose to tail’ or ‘all-inclusive’ packages a real solution to the uncertainty of maintenance costs or a myth to entice operators to sign long term contracts?
2:45 pm The Importance of Spare Engines – to Lease or to Own?
  • Don Nunemaker, President, Willis Lease Finance Corporation
Repairing rather than replacing engines is key in increasing on wing time, optimising work scopes and consequently reducing MRO costs. Spare engines are essential in making this philosophy a success. How do you manage your portfolio to ensure maximum value from your assets? Is the leasing of spare engines a more efficient and flexible way of financing? Discussing the most effective spare engine strategies to reduce risk and control costs.
3:30 pm Networking Break
4:00 pm Panel Discussion: Co-operations vs. Competition in Engine MRO
  • MODERATOR: Jim Andrews, VP and GM Engine Solutions, Aveos
  • Panelists to include:
  • Enrique Hernandez, General Manager, Turkish Engine Centre
  • Sadettin Ilgin, Consultant, ADAERO Engine Services
  • Roberto Furlan, VP Part Repair, SR Technics
The engine MRO market is increasingly dominated by OEMs with the proliferation of long-term and all-inclusive maintenance contracts from the point of purchase. This in conjunction with the growth in OEM/MRO joint ventures and collaborations is resulting in a changed playing field for all providers. What are the ramifications of an increasingly OEM-centric industry? What is the market view on single providers? How can independent suppliers survive? What is the impact on pricing and capacity? Are we seeing a ‘new breed’ of engine MRO providers that will change the market beyond recognition?
4:50 pm Panel Discussion: Hear from the Airlines – Expectations, Concerns and Priorities
  • MODERATOR: Jim Andrews, VP and GM Engine Solutions, Aveos
  • Panelists to include:

  • Ataç Oruç, Assistant Engineering Manager, Onur Air
  • Cemil Sayar, Technical Director, SunExpress
A discussion of the top drivers for, and demands of, airlines when contracting engine maintenance services. What are their priorities and does this vary from operator to operator? What is the biggest issue/concern when entering into negotiations? Evaluating maintenance planning strategies and sharing best practice in cost reduction.
5:40 pm Cocktail Reception
Day Two – Thursday 3rd November 2011
8:30 am Registration and Continental Breakfast
9:00 am Development of Engine MRO Capabilities in Turkey
  • Ahmet Çağrı Özer, Manager Strategy Planning and Projects Department, Turkish Technic
Engine MRO is set for major growth with the expansion in aircraft fleets enlarging the engine population as well as modern engines requiring more complex and therefore more expensive repairs. In addition, outside of the more traditional markets, engine MRO spend is forecasted to dramatically increase in Asia, impacting on capacity worldwide. How is Turkey developing its engine MRO industry to handle these challenges? What is the strategic rationale behind this expansion? What opportunities can be capitalised on? An analysis of market developments in this region.
9:45 am Facility Tour of Turkish Engine Center
Experience at first-hand how the Turkish Engine Center operates. Forum attendees will get to visit the 25,000 square metre facility, which opened in 2010, and see how it services both Turkish Airline’s fleet and third party customers. This state-of-the-art, LEED®-Gold building has the capacity to overhaul 300 engines annually. The tour will include looking at the high technology and environmentally efficient facility and the CFM56-3, -5C, -7B and V2500-A5 engine maintenance services within it. Specialists and engineers will be available to explain TEC’s engine MRO operating system and discuss how they have created their shop layout.
